The city comes alive…

…at night. When I was cycling home after a charity fundraiser last night, and when walking home after ballet class tonight, I realised Shanghai has its own nighttime culture, an evening undercurrent running through the city’s veins after dark…

…a culture of middle-aged women meeting up in collectives with their poodle-like dogs…where teenagers learn to inline skate scoring tricks…where young couples walk hand-in-hand as if they can’t be at home…where cats walk the streets in search of leftovers…where neon lights glow through dirtied window panes…where street sellers cook food for the post-work masses…where local musicians play traditional instruments, busking for a few kuai…where Rachel smiles to herself realising that she is actually here, living in Shanghai, and she is finally, quietly content.
