Slow Food Shanghai

It’s another blog post dedicated to food…good food…organic food…slow food, here in Shanghai. Last Saturday morning was the launch event for ‘Slow Food Shanghai’ on the penthouse floor of the Hilton Hotel.

It coincided with ‘Terra Madre’, Mother Earth Day, the International Slow Food day of celebration. The views were immense across Southern Shanghai that brunch-lunch time as the sky was clear blue, sunshine blazing through the cold, crisp air. For those of you not familiar with “slow food”, it is

“…a global, grassroots organization with supporters in 150 countries around the world who are linking the pleasure of good food with a commitment to their community and the environment….Slow Food was founded in 1989 to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.”

Definitely my kind of organisation…supporting local and independent businesses in China. Perfect. I was pleased to see this new initiative unfold, and there is no better place to do it than in Shanghai…a city constantly on the move, always looking for the next best new thing. The event was overwhelmingly popular, and you could see why as some of Shanghai’s best chefs, restaurants and food sellers came out to play. I was impressed as to how much effort the sellers had gone to and how much you could try and taste…yoghurt, chocolates of all flavours, seeds, salads, vegetables, wraps, mini burgers, jams, cupcakes, cookies, smoothies, cheeses, granola, bagels, banoffee pie, hummus, salsa, chutneys, falafel, dumplings, stuffed eggs, sushi, tofu…I could go on and on. A few of my favourite places are ‘Kush’ (great restaurant for lunch who do half wrap-half soup-half salad deals…vegetarian wraps and soups are top-notch too), ‘Anna Maya’ (Vegan-orama foods including fantastic seeded carob snacks), ‘Organic Kitchen’ (all round amazing organic foods delivered to your door), ‘Table No. 1’ (a little more on the pricey side but good evening dinner food), ‘Baker and Spice’ (busy expat place though the best weekend spot for a huge glass of peppermint tea for 18 kuai and yummy cakes/tarts…they also do a tasty walnut and rye loaf), ‘The Purple Onion’ and ‘Mr. Willis’ (I haven’t actually been to these restaurants yet), ‘Amelia’s Marketplace’ (super good jams and chutneys made by a very lovely British lady – you have to try the rhubarb and ginger jam…she has just teamed up with other shops to create ‘PANTRY’) and ‘Jiashan Market’ (I think this is on fortnightly (?)…a market to buy all the organic and slow foods you can think of…they have homemade arts and crafts too…so it’s a perfect event for me). I could go on with the list of ‘Slow Food’ spots but these are the one’s I liked. It made me think back to the local markets and places I would shop at back in the UK, including farmer’s markets and farm shops round where my parents live. I miss them a lot. I think in 2012 I will try and invest only in local and organic produce…why don’t you? In fact I’m going to note this resolution down now…quite a good one to live by…
