NEW ZOMBIE FILM: ‘Haze & Fog’ by Cao Fei

One of the major projects I have been working on recently is the co-commission of a new film by established female Chinese artist Cao Fei. Called ‘Haze and Fog’ (2013), it is a new zombie movie set in China’ modern-day metropolis exploring how the collective consciousness of people living in the time of what the artist calls “magical metropolises” emerges from seemingly tedious, mundane, day-to-day life. It is clearly focussed on the middle classes who have entered a “new fog” of neutral modernity in their house cells, they are placed in relation to the communities of people around them such as service industries such as cleaners, real estate agents, prostitutes, deliveries, security and baby sitters. ‘Haze and Fog’ (2013) shows the miracles of the world are blurring and we need something special to help us see more between the visible and the invisible…a balance between the traditional and modern/tradition and progress of China…and of right and wrong. I don’t want to say too much as really it has to be seen…

It is the first artwork to be acquired as part of a new Chinese Contemporary Art Collection in partnership with University of Salford…on show at (and produced by) Eastside Projects (launching 20 September), TATE (screening 22 September), Arnolfini (late September) and with us at Chinese Arts Centre from October. We will be launching it at a media screening on 11 October at Media City UK and then at our main gallery on the evening 25 October in conjunction with our 10th Birthday and our re-brand (new name ahoy!). It will be on show until 7 December.

So here’s the trailer, a sneak peek and in progress snapshots. It is something special, something intimate, something scary, something sexy, something provocative, something that you’ve never seen before…come and share it with us this Autumn…I think it is going to be rather unforgettable.
